Patient Information
Description
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive manual therapy focusing on the craniosacral system, which includes the cranial bones, spinal column, sacrum, associated membranes, and cerebrospinal fluid. Using light manual contact, CST aims to reduce restrictions and support physiological regulation and balance. CST may be used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical care.
What is a Registered Craniosacral Therapist?
Registered practitioners are accredited by the Craniosacral Therapy Association (CSTA) UK and use the letters RCST after their names. They adhere to the CSTA’s Code of Ethics and requirements for continuing professional development.
Practitioners do not need to be registered with the CSTA in order to provide craniosacral therapy. They do however, need to have the relevant qualification.
Indications
Craniosacral Therapy may be sought for stress-related symptoms, headaches and migraines, musculoskeletal discomfort (including neck, back, or jaw), sleep disturbance, anxiety, fatigue, recovery following illness or injury, and general wellbeing support in both adults and children.
Treatment Process
Prior to treatment, the practitioner will take a detailed case history, including relevant medical history, current symptoms, medications, and life experiences. Patients remain fully clothed and positioned comfortably, usually supine. The practitioner applies light, sustained manual contact, commonly at the cranium, spine, or sacrum. Sessions are quiet, low impact, and individualised according to clinical presentation.
Expected Post-Treatment Responses
Responses vary and may include deep relaxation, transient fatigue, changes in energy levels, mild short-term discomfort, or emotional responses. These effects are generally mild and self-limiting.
Aftercare Advice
Patients are advised to maintain hydration, allow time for rest, avoid strenuous activity for the remainder of the day where possible, and observe any physical or emotional changes over the following 24-48 hours. Patients should contact their practitioner if symptoms persist or cause concern.
Follow-Up Appointments
Clinical response may be immediate or cumulative. A short course of sessions, reduced-frequency follow-ups, or routine / maintenance appointments may be recommended. Treatment plans are reviewed collaboratively.
Disclaimer
Craniosacral Therapy is a complementary therapy and is not a substitute for medical diagnosis, treatment, or emergency care. Patients should continue to consult their GP or qualified healthcare professional regarding medical conditions.
